Kyphosis is the spine's natural backward curve through the upper back; "hyper" means more curve than usual, "flat" means less.
Every thoracic spine has some kyphosis. The word in a session note is locating that curve, not naming a disease. 📝Hyperkyphosis is the postural finding of more rounding than the person's easy stack; a flattened upper back is the other end. In 📝Postural / Structural Realignment both are patterns of how the person meets gravity, not a diagnosis of Scheuermann's disease, osteoporosis, or a spine that must be forced straight.
Clients often hear kyphosis as a verdict. The useful question is whether the upper back can still extend and whether the head and ribs can stack without a brace.
Sudden increase in rounding, unexplained height loss, or night pain is a referral.
