Gridfinity is an open modular storage standard for 📝3D Printing, built on a 42 mm square grid and 7 mm height increments, in which printed baseplates hold interchangeable bins that fit any drawer, shelf, or workbench.
Zack Freedman published the system in 2022 to solve a workshop problem — screws, bits, and small tools that were technically stored but never findable — and released the designs for the community to extend rather than as a finished product line. The design descends from Alexandre Chappel's Assortment System, which established the grid-and-bin approach that Gridfinity standardized into fixed dimensions.
The standard's value is the dimension, not any particular bin. Because every component is a multiple of 42 × 42 × 7 mm, a bin printed by a stranger three years ago drops into a baseplate printed today, and a drawer can be reorganized by moving bins rather than reprinting the layout. That fixed contract is what turned it into a de facto community standard: thousands of community models now cover tools, electronics, hardware, and cases, with parametric generators such as the Gridfinity Generator producing custom bins to specification without any CAD work.
Grid choice remains the standard's live debate. 42 mm divides evenly into common drawer and shelf dimensions and prints comfortably on a 220 mm bed, but critics note it wastes space in metric cabinetry sized to other modules, and competing systems — Multiboard, OpenGrid, HSW — have proposed different grids for wall and panel mounting where Gridfinity's drawer-first geometry fits less naturally.
