Flagship Pioneering is a life-sciences venture-creation firm founded in 1999 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Noubar Afeyan and Ed Kania. Rather than investing mainly in outside startups, it conceives companies in-house, builds them around patentable scientific platforms, and capitalizes them, working across biotechnology, health, agriculture and sustainability.
The firm began as NewcoGen ("new company generation"), later operated as Flagship Ventures, and took the name Flagship Pioneering in 2016; Afeyan remains CEO. It reports founding more than 120 companies, launching six to eight a year, and taking 25 public since 2013. Its best-known creation is Moderna, formed in 2010 to develop mRNA medicines; others include Indigo Agriculture, Editas Medicine and Generate:Biomedicines. General partner 📝Geoffrey von Maltzahn has co-founded many Flagship companies, including 📝Lila Sciences, which Flagship incubated from 2023 and unveiled in 2025.
