"Don't make it about you, make it about your audience." - 📝Max Schlienger
In response to the question, "how can creators target ethically?" Schlienger clarifies that he doesn't think it's possible to be ethical about targeting a market or demographic because it implies a situation where a creator is forcing their content onto the audience. However, when one approaches content creation with earnestness, through the lens of catering instead of targeting, then it becomes an undertaking that can and should be done ethically.
Schlienger goes on to say that it's important not just to think about the content, but distribution channels and means of consumption too. He stresses taking into consideration what will happen when people interact with our messages so we can create something they'll respond well to.
Even if you are doing it earnestly, you are doing it genuinely, you want to do it in a place where people are predisposed to appreciate that. You don't want to interrupt or even invade someone's space where they have their culture, their expectations, their own ideas of what is and what isn't appropriate. Because if you do that, you're making it about you; and really, any creator wants to make it about their audience. They want to benefit as many people as possible. So while I agree that you cannot target ethically; you must cater, if you are going to contribute ethically.
