How to store filament so a spool opened today still prints six months from now — for anyone whose collection has outgrown the box it arrived in. Part of 📝Getting Started with 3D Printing.
Store an opened spool
- One spool, one bag — 2-gallon Ziplock bags with the air pulled out by a household vacuum. Cheaper and more effective than most dry boxes sold for the job.
- Desiccant in every bag — A vacuum bag with no silica inside is not storing filament, it is only holding it. Silica is the working part; the bag is the container.
- Printed spool inserts — Desiccant container holders drop beads into the spool's hollow core, so the silica rides inside the spool instead of rattling loose in the bag.
- A printed vacuum attachment — An adapter modeled to your own vacuum's nozzle turns sealing a bag into a few-second job, which is the difference between doing it and not.
- Label the open date — Filament has no expiry, but knowing when a spool was opened tells you whether a bad print is a settings problem or a moisture problem.
Choose and recharge desiccant
- Use indicating beads — Blue indicating silica gel changes color as it saturates. Non-indicating beads work identically and tell you nothing, which makes them useless in a sealed bag.
- Read the color, not the calendar — The beads losing their blue is the recharge signal. Elapsed time is not, because how fast they load depends entirely on how well the bag sealed.
- Recharge with heat — Saturated beads regenerate. Running them through the AMS drying cycle restores them in place, with no oven and no separate appliance.
- Print a bead caddy — A spool that holds every desiccant insert keeps recharged stock and saturated stock visibly separated instead of mixed in a jar.
Know which materials care
- PLA — Least fussy of the common filaments, but wet 📝PLA still pops audibly at the nozzle and strings across travel moves.
- PETG — Moisture shows up as bubbling, a rough surface, and weak layer bonding. 📝PETG is wet often enough that drying is the first thing to try.
- TPU — Dry before every use, not just after long storage. Flexible filament is both hygroscopic and slow to print, so a wet spool wastes hours.
- Nylon (PA) — Extreme. Pulls enough moisture from room air in hours to ruin a print, and needs active drying while printing rather than only before.
- ABS and ASA — Moderately sensitive, but moisture compounds the 📝warping these materials are already prone to.
Gotchas
- Wet filament reads as a printer problem — Stringing, popping, weak layers and rough surfaces all get blamed on the slicer. Check dryness before changing a single setting.
- Sealed is not dry — Vacuum-sealing traps whatever humidity was in the room at sealing time. The silica is what removes it; the vacuum only stops more from arriving.
- Do not store nylon parts with desiccant — A printed nylon part gets tougher as it reabsorbs moisture. The spool wants to be dry; the finished part does not.
- A dry box is not a dryer — Storage holds a spool at its current moisture level. A spool that arrived wet needs heat before it needs a box.
