Mythos

Death of a Fantastic Machine is a mini 🏷️#documentary that centers on the question, "Can you believe your own eyes?" Created by Maximilien Van Aertryck and Axel Danielson, the film examines the camera’s evolution from a simple recording device to an essential part of today’s multibillion-dollar content industry. It traces how economic incentives and technological advances—particularly artificial intelligence—have fundamentally altered the nature of images and challenged the credibility of visual information. As cameras become ubiquitous, with estimates of over 45 billion worldwide, the filmmakers highlight how the very tool that once promised new perspectives now often serves to distort reality. This shift raises important questions about trust, truth, and the changing landscape of visual media.

📝Christian Knudsen shared “Death of a Fantastic Machine” with me, and it landed at just the right moment. The film’s central question—can you believe your own eyes?—hits differently now that 📝Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated images are everywhere. I’ve always treated what I see as a reliable anchor, something to ground my perception of reality. Watching this documentary forced me to confront how easily those anchors can be shifted or even manufactured. It’s unsettling, but also clarifying: discernment is no longer optional. I’m left questioning my first impressions more deliberately and reminding myself to look beneath the surface, especially in a world where surfaces are so easily constructed.
