Mythos

The Way of the World is the third chapter of 📝The Ascent of Humanity by 📝Charles Eisenstein. It examines how the scientific worldview completed the project of 📝separation, turning a living cosmos into a machine to be measured and mastered.

Eisenstein traces the scientific method, the Age of Reason, and the ambition to become "masters of the universe" through their quest for certainty and their habit of reducing reality to its smallest measurable parts. The result is the "ghost in the machine" — mind exiled from a dead, mechanical world — and an account of life's origins that leaves humanity, in the chapter's closing phrase, alone in the universe. The worldview is enormously powerful and, Eisenstein argues, quietly unlivable.
