Communications engineering is the discipline focused on the design, transmission, and reception of information across distance — historically the engineering of telephone, radio, and television systems, and now the underlying stack of digital, mobile, and satellite networks that move signal globally.

The field sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, information theory, and computer science. Core problems include signal coding, modulation, error correction, channel capacity (Shannon's theorem remains its founding result), antenna design, multiplexing, and the design of network protocols. Practitioners work across hardware (transceivers, repeaters, base stations) and software (codecs, routing logic, network stacks).

In contemporary form, communications engineering increasingly bleeds into adjacent fields — software-defined radio, 5G/6G systems, optical networking, and machine-learning-driven channel estimation — and is foundational to nearly every other engineering discipline that depends on data moving from one place to another. The classical separation between "communications" and "computing" has all but collapsed.
