Mythos

The network state is a socio-political concept describing a new kind of community and 🏷️#governance-model enabled by digital technologies. Coined and popularized by 📝Balaji Srinivasan, a network state refers to a highly aligned online community with a shared mission that gathers sufficient collective strength to achieve political influence or even territorial presence. Unlike traditional nation-states, which are defined by geography, network states are defined by ideology, purpose, and connectivity. They form first as communities, grow into economies, and then negotiate for diplomatic recognition. Their legitimacy stems from their capacity to mobilize resources, coordinate at scale, and demonstrate coherence across physical and digital domains. Srinivasan outlines this vision in his 2022 book The Network State, where he proposes it as a response to institutional decline and as a prototype for post-national governance.
