A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship. Lichens have different properties from those of its component organisms. Lichens come in many colors, sizes, and forms and are sometimes plant-like, but lichens are not plants.
"Lichens encrust as much as 8% of the planet's surface. They clad rocks, trees, roofs, fences, cliffs, and the surface of deserts. Some are lime green and others are a drab camouflage. Some look like stains and others like shrubs." ~ Entangled Life
Reflections
"Lichens are remarkable examples of innovation emerging from partnership. The association is far more than the sum of its parts." ~ Lynn Margolis, Endosymbiotic Theory
