Mythos

The Origins of Separation is the second chapter of 📝The Ascent of Humanity by 📝Charles Eisenstein. It asks how the 📝separate self — the sense of a self divided from world and others — first took hold, and finds the answer not in a single fall but in a slow accumulation of cultural technologies.

Each technology of separation began as a genuine gift and then hardened into a wall. Language and 📝Labeling the World sorted an infinite, unrepeatable reality into fixed categories; mathematics and measure made the world countable; clocks made time a quantity; agriculture turned the wild into managed cultivation; the machine extended the logic of control. Eisenstein reads even religion and ritual as part of the pattern — and closes on "The Playful Universe," a hint that separation was never the whole story.
