Objective
Journaling is the practice of regularly recording thoughts, experiences, or reflections in written form. It has been used for centuries by figures such as Marcus Aurelius, Anne Frank, and Virginia Woolf as a means of self-exploration, creativity, and discipline. Studies have shown that journaling can enhance learning, improve psychological well-being, and support emotional regulation, particularly after stressful events. Research from institutions including Harvard Business School and Cambridge University highlights benefits ranging from increased performance and improved sleep to stronger communication skills. While methods vary—from structured systems like The Bullet Journal Method to freeform narrative entries—the common thread is reflection as a tool for clarity, growth, and resilience.
Subjective
I read The Bullet Journal Method and started my Bullet Journal (BuJo) in February of 2019 and journaled every day until March of 2022 when—not wanting to carry my supplies for weeks of travel abroad—I made the switch to digital. It took me about two years to re-form the habit in the new medium, but I now journal every day in MythOS using the Daily Memo (kill) feature.
