John Lennon (1940–1980) was an English 🏷️#musician, singer, and songwriter who co-founded The Beatles with Paul McCartney in Liverpool in 1960 and remained the principal songwriting collaborator with McCartney across the band's recorded catalog through their dissolution in 1970.
After The Beatles, Lennon released a sequence of solo albums — including John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970), Imagine (1971), and Double Fantasy (1980) — that combined confessional songwriting with overt political and peace activism, much of it pursued jointly with his second wife Yoko Ono through projects like Bed-Ins for Peace and the Bagism conceptual art frame. He was shot and killed outside his New York City home on December 8, 1980; his music, image, and the song Imagine in particular have remained central reference points in twentieth-century popular culture, peace iconography, and songwriter craft for the decades since.
